Company History

Formed in 1993, Piedmont Communications, Inc is a locally owned and operated broadcasting company, providing radio programming of local importance and advertising results to the communities surrounding Culpeper, Orange, and Louisa.  The company began with the purchase of WJMA AM and FM in Orange in early 1993, and has grown through strategic acquisitions to its current operations of four radio stations in three communities of license.

In November 2003, the company acquired WCUL FM and WCVA AM in Culpeper from Joyner Broadcasting through a deal in which Joyner acquired the Orange FM license.  WJMA FM’s popular programming and call sign moved to the newly acquired FM, giving WJMA and former WCUL listeners a much wider listening area.  In May 2004, the company bought WLSA FM in Louisa from Mid-Virginia Broadcasting.  The current configuration gives Piedmont Communications, Inc. ownership of WJMA FM and WCVA AM, Culpeper; WVCV AM, Orange; and WOJL FM, Louisa.  Listeners from Fauquier County in the north, to Fluvanna County and Charlottesville in the south; from Fredericksburg and Goochland in the east to the top of the Blue Ridge mountains in the west can now hear programming provided by Piedmont Communications, Inc.  With the installation of new state of the art IBOC transmitting equipment in 2006, WJMA and WOJL became the first two commercial FM stations of their market size in Virginia to begin broadcasting in full HD high definition, providing listeners with the best possible audio quality available anywhere in the U.S.  Piedmont Communications, Inc. will continue to use the latest technological advances and listener responsive programming to deliver the best radio service in Virginia.
